Ever wonder why Montrealers carry wine bottles down the street?

Back in the late 1970s, strict liquor regulations made a full bar licence very expensive for small, independent restaurants. Right here in the Plateau, along streets like Duluth, immigrant chefs and local bistro owners let guests bring their own wine, since they could not sell it.

What started as a neighbourhood workaround became a city habit. By the 1980s, Quebec had formalized the “apportez votre vin” permit. Today, buying a bottle at the SAQ and bringing it to the table is a Montreal ritual: the meal is ours, the wine is yours.

What to keep in mind

• Alcohol you can bring. Under Quebec law, you can bring wine, beer, or cider of a typical strength. Premixed canned cocktails and coolers under 7% alcohol are allowed too. Spirits such as vodka, gin, or tequila are not allowed under a bring-your-own-wine permit, at any strength.
• Fair value on the menu. A bring-your-own-wine restaurant does not make its money on alcohol, so menu prices can sit a little higher to make up for that. Skipping the markup on the bottle is what keeps the night a good value.
• A citywide tradition. You will find these restaurants across Montreal, from an Italian room like this one to French, Mediterranean, Asian, and many others.

In Montreal, where you buy it depends on what you want.

• The SAQ (Société des alcools du Québec). Quebec’s liquor store, and the widest choice of imported wines, Chianti, local spirits, and specialty bottles. Most SAQ stores close earlier in the evening. SAQ Express locations stay open later.
• Grocery stores and dépanneurs. For a quick bottle of beer or a simpler wine, grocery stores and corner stores (dépanneurs) sell them until 11 pm every day.
